Welcome to Alumina2024, the 12th AQW Conference and Exhibition, to be held at the Grand Hyatt Dubai luxury resort hotel with the generous support of our Diamond sponsor and host, Emirates Global Aluminium.

We are anticipating a vibrant technical program, with over 50 papers already received, and with many more (bringing the total up to 80) expected to be submitted over the coming weeks. Add to this multiple plenary lectures from respected thought-leaders from academia and industry and beyond, many keynote presentations from well-regarded experts, an extensive industry exhibition and this, the first AQW symposium to be held outside Australia, promises to deliver the trademark scope, quality, and networking vibrancy that our delegates, sponsors, and exhibitors have always enjoyed.

Opportunities for networking and discovery have always been central to the AQW symposia. Alumina 2024 is no exception. Our exhibitors and their technologies and products are vital to our industry, helping to drive us forward in all aspects of our business, including operational efficiency, safety and environmental performance, and to meeting our long-term sustainability goals. We have worked hard to ensure that there is ample opportunity for the alumina industry and our valued suppliers to interact during and after the sessions every day.

Three evening social events have also been organized, allowing time to unwind and encourage conversation, with delicious cuisine and an opportunity to take in some of the iconic sights of Dubai. The Welcome Reception and Gala Conference dinner are included in your registration package, but please join us for the special social event on Tuesday night. We promise it will be a night to remember.

Industry workshops are central to the role of AQW: It’s right there in the name. We will be continuing the tradition of holding an industry workshop, and this year’s theme is an especially important one. Our industry is experiencing revolutionary change as we evolve into a more sustainable future and it is critical to prepare for it as best we can. We all have a part to play in this, and your contribution could be the key to success. This watershed event, sponsored by the IAI will draw together the industry’s leading technical minds to define the major challenges and identify the initiatives required for a successful transition of our industry to a carbon-free future. We encourage you to register early to be part of this major event. Find out more on the Workshop page.

A key objective of AQW Inc. is to "foster and encourage education in fields of endeavour that contribute to the long-term success and sustainability of the bauxite/alumina industry". Accordingly, we will offer financial assistance for students to attend, to present their work and to engage in activities that encourage their involvement in the future of bauxite/alumina. For eligibility criteria and to apply for assistance, please refer to the Student Assistance page. An innovation that we are trialling at this conference, with the aid of AQW’s Education Officers, is the introduction of a mentor program for all students attending the conference. If you are a seasoned alumina professional and are willing to mentor a student at the conference, introduce them to other industry experts and companies and generally make them feel welcome in our Industry, please let us know asap.

Technical tours are one of the highlights of any industry conference, and have been a staple of all AQW symposia since the first was held in Gladstone, Queensland Australia back in 1988. Alumina2024’s tours will encompass both the Al Taweelah alumina refinery and the smelter, both of which showcase some of the most advanced technologies in the business. As always, places are limited and selling fast, so make sure you register your interest soon.

We have partnered with other important industry bodies to maximise the benefits of your trip to Dubai. The International Aluminium Institute and the HILT Cooperative Research Centre will both have a presence at the conference, and we have scheduled our events to make sure that delegates can participate in their events without compromising on any part of Alumina2024. Check out the Concurrent Meetings page for more information, or visit the IAI or HILT web sites.

Finally, we scoured the city for a venue that could offer everything we felt was needed for a first class conference and provide adequate exhibition space, and the Grand Hyatt certainly does that. We have negotiated with the Hyatt to bring you the best possible value and we highly encourage you to take advantage of the limited number rooms we have reserved. We will endeavour to assist those that miss out with quality accommodation nearby – but be aware that you will need to take care of your daily transportation to and from the venue yourself.
