The Al Taweelah alumina refinery, situated adjacent to the smelter, began production in 2019. The refinery, which has a nameplate capacity of 2M tonnes per annum, is the first in the UAE and only the second in the Middle East. It supplies over 45 per cent of EGA’s alumina needs.
Visitors will be given a guided bus tour of the refinery, with commentary and Q&A sessions provided by EGA personnel. The tour will pass all of the major unit operations, including two sites where pilot plants dedicated to EGA’s Bauxite Residue utilisation technologies are in operation or under construction. For safety reasons, guests will not be permitted to leave the bus during the operations tour.
However, guests will be able to stretch their legs during a walking tour of the central control room and a visit to the auditorium at EGA’s corporate headquarters, where they can also inspect the demonstration garden built using EGA’s “Turba” manufactured soil. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The refinery is approximately 1.5 hours by bus from the conference venue. The morning tour (40 persons max) will depart at 8:00 am and return at 2:00pm. The midday tour (40 persons max) will depart at 10:30am and return at 4:30 pm.

EGA’s Al Taweelah smelter was built in two phases. The first began production in 2009, and the second in 2013. On completion it was the largest single-site smelter in the world, extending over six square kilometres. In 2019, the site became the first in the Middle East to receive certification to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative Performance Standards, the aluminium industry’s internationally recognised standard for environmental and social performance and governance.
Visitors to the smelter will be given a walking tour within an operating potline, together with a visit to the auditorium at EGA’s corporate headquarters, where they can also inspect the demonstration garden built using EGA’s “Turba” manufactured soil. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
A morning tour only (40 persons max) will be provided. Delegates selecting this tour will be required to provide clothing and shoe size information during registration, so that they can be provided with suitable PPE prior to the tour.
